How to Choose an IT Contractor — 10 Questions

How to choose an IT contractor for your website: ten questions to ask before signing, and the warning signs to watch for.
Choosing who to trust with your website is often harder than choosing a price. You can't see the result in advance, and if you choose wrong, you'll find out months later. Below are ten questions worth asking before signing a contract. They're simple, but the answers reveal a lot.
About their work and experience
1. Can you show me similar projects? Not screenshots — ask for links to live sites. Open them, and check on a phone too.
2. Who exactly will work on this project? Company size matters less than how many people, and which, are assigned to your task.
3. Can I speak to a previous client? A trustworthy company answers this calmly.
About the process
4. Will there be a written specification, and will it be attached to the contract? One of the key questions — without a spec, an agreement turns into “we never discussed that”.
5. What stages is the work split into, and when is each one shown? A project shown only once at the end is risky.
6. How many revisions are included, and from what point are they charged separately? Agreeing this upfront protects both sides.
After handover
7. Who will own the site — whose name are the domain and hosting registered under? If the answer is “ours”, be careful: you won't be able to leave and take your site with you.
8. Will you hand over full access to the code and admin panel?
9. Is there a warranty, and what does it cover? The line between fixing a bug and adding a new feature should be clear.
10. How does support work after handover, and what does it cost? A website is a living product — it needs updates.
Warning signs
The price is quoted verbally with no written proposal.
A price is given immediately, without asking about the task. An accurate price requires understanding what's needed first.
Everything is promised very fast and very cheap. This usually ends in extra charges.
Questions aren't answered directly, hidden behind jargon. A good specialist can explain complex things simply.
Is a young team a drawback?
We'll be honest, because this applies to us too: UProject was founded in 2025, and we don't have a decades-long portfolio. So here's our objective answer.
Years in business aren't a guarantee of quality on their own. What matters is how a team explains the process, what they put in the contract, and whether they dodge uncomfortable questions. A younger team is often more attentive and replies faster. But ask all ten questions above regardless — the answers tell you more than years of experience do.
Conclusion
The cheapest offer is almost never the most economical one. A written proposal, a clear specification, a domain in your name and straightforward answers — with those four in place, the risk drops considerably.
